July 2023 Cigar of the Month Sampler

1 – Oliva Nub Connecticut 460 ($8.00 Retail)

Origin: Nicaragua • Wrapper: Ecuadorian Connecticut • Binder: Nicaragua • Filler: Nicaragua • Size: 4 x 60 • Body: Mild-Medium

One of the first cigars to harness the potential of large ring gauges, Oliva’s NUb brand cuts to the chase with short/stout smoking experiences that are said to offer only the “sweet spot” of the smoking experience. The NUb Connecticut is among the most tame offerings in the collection, making use of an Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper over all-Nicaraguan binder/filler. This isn’t to say the cigar is “mild,” as it pushes the body just under medium, making for a fuller-flavored Connecticut style, with standout notes of clean cedar, buttered nuts, and cream through the finish.

1 – Camacho Nicaraguan Barrel-Aged Robusto ($9.20 Retail)

Origin: Honduras• Wrapper: Ecuador Habano 2000 • Binder: Mexican San Andres Negrito • Filler: Nicaragua (Barrel-Aged Corojo ’99) I Honduras I Dominican Republic• Size: 5 x 50 • Body: Medium

Following hot on the footsteps of Camacho’s USA-focused American Barrel-Aged cigar, the company launched the Nicaraguan sister blend in 2017: Camacho Nicaraguan Barrel-Aged. Not only do the cigars use tobaccos from the country, but Camacho takes it a step further, aging a portion of the filler in spent rum barrels that formerly contained some of the country’s oldest Nicaraguan rum (Flor de Cana). Differing from Camacho’s BOLD wheelhouse, the Nicaraguan Barrel-Aged pulls back on the reins a little, allowing the aged rum influence to shine. This makes for a medium-plus intensity, with long-lasting flavors of toasted oak, sweet fruit, creamy caramel, and herbaceous mint.

1 – Ferio Tego Timeless Supreme 554 ($11.20 Retail)

Origin: Nicaragua• Wrapper: Nicaragua• Binder: Nicaragua• Filler: Nicaragua • Size: 5 x 54 • Body: Medium

Once known as the Timeless Collection Nicaragua when debuting over a decade ago, the Feria Tego Timeless Supreme was launched as the Nicaraguan sibling to the original Timeless Dominican. Feria Tego’s Michael Herklots worked closely with the famed Plasencia family to bring the blend to life, making use of their prized Nicaraguan tobaccos throughout the wrapper, binder, and filler. This makes for a medium-plus-bodied puro, showcasing a true Nicaraguan experience with a surprising level of balance, hitting notes of mineral-rich earth, molasses bread, cocoa, and touches of cinnamon.

1 – AVO Classic No. 2 ($11.80 Retail)

Origin: Dominican Republic • Wrapper: Ecuadorian Connecticut • Binder: Dominican Republic • Filler: Dominican Republic • Size: 6½ x 50 • Body: Mild-Medium

The word “Classic” doesn’t do this special blend justice! AYO Classic is the oldest cigar in the AVO portfolio, showcasing the sheer excellence that can be accomplished when two visionaries (Hendrik Kelner and Avo Uvezian) set their sights on perfection. The two began working on what would become AYO Cigars in the mid-’80s, focusing on Kelner’s ultra-premium Dominican tobaccos and an overall profile of refinement. The cigar begins with its signature 25-year-aged Dominican leaf, which is combined with other DR leaves in the filler. This special formula is then paired with a Dominican binder and a unique Ecuadorian

sun-grown Connecticut wrapper. With a body just under medium, the profile is sophisticated, having bright, citrus-loaded flavors and a creamy texture, showing nuances of sweet cedar, buttery nuts, florals, and nougat.

1 – Macanudo Estate Reserve Toro ($20.00 Retail)

Origin: Honduras• Wrapper: Nicaraguan Shade-Grown Corojo • Binder: Nicaragua• Filler: Colombia I Nicaragua I Peru • Size: 6 x 54 • Body: Medium

Spirits and cigars are a no-brainer, but wine/cigar crossovers are oftentimes more difficult to pull off (though, when done successfully, can be quite the treat). Macanudo took the concept head-on with the Macanudo Estate Reserve cigar, aging Connecticut Broadleaf in French oak barrels that once contained Flint Knoll Winery’s single vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon. This unique binder is secured in Macanudo’s signature Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper, and includes fillers of Brazilian Mata Fina, Dominican Pilato Cubano, Dominican Olor, and Nicaragua (Jalapa). This special blend produces a medium-bodied smoking experience for the discerning palate, offering a thick and creamy texture and standout complexities of toasted oak, aromatic sage, jam-slathered buttered toast, and semi-sweet cream through the finish.
