As a seasoned cigar smoker, I’ve had the privilege to sample a wide range of cigars, from the most obscure to the most sought-after. I’ve been fortunate to be in the company of other cigar enthusiasts, sharing our passion and exchanging experiences. Today, I’d like to share my recent experience with the E.P Carrillo Allegiance Sidekick, a cigar that has left an indelible impression on me.

Introduction

As an avid cigar enthusiast, I have always been drawn to E.P. Carrillo cigars. The brand’s reputation for quality, craftsmanship, and flavor is truly unmatched. So, when I heard about their new release, the Allegiance Sidekick, I knew I had to get my hands on one. After savoring this cigar, I am eager to share my thoughts and experiences with other aficionados. The E.P. Carrillo AllegianceSidekick has garnered much attention in the cigar world, and for good reason. As a dedicated cigar enthusiast, I was eager to experience this highly praised cigar, and if it is anything like the incredible La Historia (the #2 Cigar in Cigar Aficionado’s Top 25 Cigars of 2014), the Encore (the 2018 Cigar of the Year), and Pledge (the 2020 Cigar of the Year), I could not contain my enthusiasm taking on this new adventure in reviewing this cigar.

In this review, I will walk you through my experience with the first, second, and final third of the cigar, highlighting its flavor profile, construction, and overall smoking experience.

Pre-Light Impressions

Upon receiving the E.P. Carrillo Allegiance Sidekick, I was immediately impressed by its beautiful appearance. The cigar sports a smooth, dark Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper, which feels almost velvety to the touch. The slightly box-pressed shape adds to the overall aesthetic, giving the cigar an air of sophistication and elegance.

The band design is also noteworthy, featuring the classic E.P. Carrillo logo alongside the words “Allegiance” and “Sidekick.” The use of red, white, and gold colors on the band gives the cigar a sense of reality, while also emphasizing the brand’s commitment to excellence.

As I held the Sidekick in my hand, I couldn’t help but admire its construction. The cigar had a firm yet slightly springy feel, indicating a well-rolled product with an even distribution of tobacco. Additionally, the seams were nearly invisible, further showcasing the attention to detail and skill that went into crafting this masterpiece.

Before lighting up, I decided to take a moment to appreciate the pre-light aroma. The wrapper offered a subtle scent of earth, cocoa, and cedar, while the foot revealed a more pronounced aroma of rich tobacco and a hint of spice. This combination of scents piqued my interest, and I eagerly anticipated the flavors that awaited me.

First Third:

Upon first glance, the E.P. Carrillo Allegiance Sidekick presented an impressive and appealing appearance. With a stunning, deep brown Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper adorned by a beautifully detailed band, this cigar was nothing short of a masterpiece. The oily sheen on the wrapper, coupled with a well-executed triple cap, gave me high expectations for the smoking experience.

As I took my first few puffs, I was greeted by an intricate mix of flavors. A delicate balance of earthiness, cocoa, and a subtle sweetness danced on my palate, creating a harmony that was both intriguing and satisfying. The cigar’s draw was smooth and effortless, with a perfect resistance that made each puff an enjoyable experience. The smoke was rich and creamy, filling the room with a pleasant aroma reminiscent of a high-end lounge.

The burn line remained sharp and even throughout the first third, a testament to the excellent construction of the cigar. The ash held firm, displaying a tight, light gray appearance that made it clear this was a well-aged and well-constructed cigar.

Second Third:

As I transitioned into the second third of the E.P. Carrillo Allegiance Sidekick, I noticed a subtle evolution in the flavor profile. The earthy notes became more prominent, accompanied by a slight increase in the sweetness, which I attributed to a hint of dried fruit. An undertone of roasted nuts and espresso rounded out the flavor, providing a more complex and layered experience.

The construction remained impeccable as the cigar continued to burn evenly and consistently. The smoke output remained generous, with a satisfyingly thick texture that lingered on the palate. The ash continued to hold firm, a sign of the cigar’s superior quality.

The retrohale during the second third presented a delightful mix of cedar, spice, and a subtle, almost floral quality. This added an extra layer of depth to the cigar, making it clear that the E.P. Carrillo Allegiance Sidekick was a product of skilled craftsmanship and passion.

Final Third:

As I entered the final third of the cigar, I was excited to see how the flavors would continue to develop. The E.P. Carrillo Allegiance Sidekick did not disappoint, as the earthiness took on a slightly darker and richer profile. The sweetness subsided a bit, making way for a more prominent cocoa flavor, accompanied by a hint of leather.

The construction remained flawless, with the burn line still razor sharp and the ash holding strong. The smoke continued to be thick and luxurious, enveloping my senses in a cocoon of rich flavors and aromas.

The final third’s retrohale showcased a slightly stronger spice, mingling with the cedar and cocoa notes to create a satisfying and memorable finish. As I reached the nub of the cigar, I was reluctant to put it down, a testament to the captivating experience provided by the E.P. Carrillo Allegiance Sidekick.
