Some cigars demand an occasion.<\/p>\n
Others simply find their way into one.<\/p>\n
This particular evening wasn’t about celebration, contemplation, or chasing some spectacular sunset. It was\u00a0maintenance night in the Cave<\/b>\u2014one of those routines I’ve followed for years.<\/p>\n
Weapons out. Cleaning cloths on the table. A little oil. Inspection. Wipe down. Preventive maintenance.<\/p>\n
Nothing excessive. Nothing complicated.<\/p>\n
Just taking care of equipment so it’s ready when it’s supposed to be.<\/p>\n
And sitting alongside everything was a cigar whose name and appearance couldn’t have fit the setting much better:<\/p>\n
The Hooten Young Ma Deuce<\/a>.<\/b><\/b><\/p>\n The name immediately calls to mind the legendary Browning M2 .50 caliber\u2014”Ma Deuce”\u2014and Hooten Young carries that inspiration directly into the cigar itself. The distinctive Cartridge shape gives the cigar an unmistakably ammunition-inspired profile.<\/p>\n Looking at it sitting in the Cave among my gear, I had to smile.<\/p>\n Yeah. This was probably the right night to smoke this thing.<\/b><\/b><\/p>\n THE CIGAR<\/b><\/b><\/p>\n Visually, the Ma Deuce makes an impression before fire ever touches tobacco.<\/p>\n The unusual shape immediately separates it from the rows of Toros, Robustos and Churchills occupying most humidors. The darker tapered head transitions into the lighter central wrapper before finishing again with darker tobacco at the foot.<\/p>\n It’s bold without needing to explain itself.<\/p>\n I gave it my usual inspection while getting everything arranged on the table. The cigar felt substantial in the hand, and despite the novelty of the shape, it didn’t strike me as some gimmick masquerading as a premium cigar.<\/p>\n I clipped it, checked the draw and began taking notes.<\/p>\n Then came fire.<\/p>\n FIRST THIRD \u2014 MORE RESTRAINT THAN FIREPOWER<\/b><\/b><\/p>\n Considering the name\u00a0Ma Deuce<\/b>, part of me expected this cigar to come out swinging.<\/p>\n It didn’t.<\/p>\n And that’s not necessarily criticism.<\/p>\n The opening was considerably more controlled than the cigar’s military-inspired presentation might suggest. I picked up an earthy tobacco foundation with wood, pepper and some darker undertones working underneath.<\/p>\n The smoke production was satisfying, and there was enough spice to keep things interesting without turning the cigar aggressive.<\/p>\n Between draws, I went back to work.<\/p>\n A little oil on a cloth.<\/p>\n Wipe.<\/p>\n Inspect.<\/p>\n Another draw.<\/p>\n Make a note.<\/p>\n There was something almost methodical about the whole evening. Maintaining equipment requires patience rather than force, and strangely enough, so did this cigar.<\/p>\n Smoke it too quickly and I could feel the flavors becoming less defined. Give it some time between draws and it behaved much better.<\/p>\n But I kept waiting for the Ma Deuce to\u00a0shift gears<\/b>.<\/p>\n That moment never really arrived.<\/p>\n SECOND THIRD \u2014 STEADY FIRE<\/b><\/b><\/p>\n Moving through the middle, the profile settled.<\/p>\n Earth remained underneath everything. Wood and pepper continued moving around it, with occasional darker coffee and cocoa-like impressions appearing in the background.<\/p>\n Nothing unpleasant.<\/p>\n Nothing remotely bad.<\/p>\n But nothing had me putting down the cleaning cloth and thinking:<\/p>\n “What the hell was THAT?”<\/i><\/i><\/p>\n And anybody who has read enough of my reviews knows exactly what I mean.<\/p>\n There are cigars where one transition suddenly commands your attention. The sweetness changes. The retrohale explodes. A completely unexpected flavor appears.<\/p>\n The Ma Deuce wasn’t doing that for me.<\/p>\n It was simply\u2026\u00a0good<\/b>.<\/p>\n Meanwhile, I encountered a minor burn issue. Nothing catastrophic and certainly nothing capable of ruining the cigar, but enough that I had to pay attention and make a small correction.<\/p>\n Later came my second complaint.<\/p>\n The bands.<\/b><\/b><\/p>\n When it was time to remove them, they didn’t cooperate as cleanly as I would have liked. I had a little wrapper trouble associated with removing them. Again, not enough to destroy the experience, but when you’re reviewing a cigar rather than simply smoking one, those little things count.<\/p>\n Construction isn’t only about whether a cigar stays lit.<\/p>\n Presentation, adhesives, bands and how cleanly they release from a wrapper are part of the experience too.<\/p>\n FINAL THIRD \u2014 WAITING FOR THE .50 CALIBER MOMENT<\/b><\/b><\/p>\n This was where I hoped the Ma Deuce would finally unload.<\/p>\n Instead, it remained remarkably consistent.<\/p>\n The tobacco became somewhat deeper and warmer as expected. The earthiness increased, pepper remained present, and the darker roasted qualities became more pronounced as heat naturally accumulated.<\/p>\n But that dramatic final transition never came.<\/p>\n So I stopped looking for it.<\/p>\n That’s actually when I began appreciating the cigar for what it was rather than what its name and appearance had made me expect.<\/p>\n The Ma Deuce wasn’t trying to knock me backward.<\/p>\n It was simply giving me a solid smoking experience while I went about my evening.<\/p>\n I finished my light maintenance, wiped everything down, put the oil and cloths away and looked over the notes I’d been making throughout the smoke.<\/p>\n There weren’t any exclamation points.<\/p>\n There also weren’t many complaints.<\/p>\n That tells the story better than some artificial numerical score ever could.<\/p>\n THE VERDICT<\/b><\/b><\/p>\n Was the Hooten Young Ma Deuce bad?<\/b><\/b><\/p>\n Absolutely not.<\/p>\n Was I disappointed?<\/b><\/b><\/p>\n No.<\/p>\n Would I describe it as extraordinary?<\/p>\n I couldn’t.<\/p>\n For my palate, this landed somewhere between\u00a0OK and good, leaning more toward OK<\/b>.<\/p>\n And there’s nothing wrong with saying that.<\/p>\n The tobacco delivered a pleasant, steady profile. The presentation is undeniably cool. The Cartridge vitola makes it memorable before it’s ever lit, and there was enough earth, wood, pepper and darker character to keep me engaged throughout the smoke.<\/p>\n My two tangible complaints were the\u00a0slight burn issue<\/b>\u00a0and the\u00a0wrapper\/band issue during removal<\/b>.<\/p>\n Neither ruined the cigar.<\/p>\n But neither should be ignored.<\/p>\n Ultimately, the biggest thing missing wasn’t quality.<\/p>\n It was\u00a0excitement<\/b>.<\/p>\n The Ma Deuce gave me a perfectly respectable evening cigar, but it never produced that transition or flavor that made me stop what I was doing and completely surrender my attention to it.<\/p>\n And maybe there’s something appropriate about that.<\/p>\n The weapons on the table weren’t there to impress anyone either.<\/p>\n They were simply being inspected, cleaned, lightly oiled and maintained.<\/p>\n No drama.<\/p>\n No theatrics.<\/p>\n Just another night of preventive maintenance in the Cave.<\/p>\n The\u00a0Hooten Young Ma Deuce<\/b><\/a>\u00a0fit right in.<\/p>\n A cigar with the appearance of a .50-caliber cartridge promised me thunder.<\/p>\n What I got was controlled fire.<\/p>\n Good. Solid. Interesting.<\/b><\/b><\/p>\n But when the smoke cleared?<\/p>\n Just OK.<\/b><\/b><\/p>\n
