There are cigar names that feel like marketing, and then there are cigars that somehow find themselves in exactly the environment they were meant for. ADVentura Blackfin\u2019<\/b>s Parlay<\/a> found me aboard\u00a0The Reel Paws\u00a0on a Saturday morning, cruising the Fort Lauderdale Intracoastal with Stacey beside me, Saber along for the adventure, and an ice-cold IBC Cream Soda within reach. I didn’t know it when we left the dock around 8:00 a.m., but this would be our last outing aboard\u00a0The Reel Paws\u00a0for a while.<\/p>\n Blackfin\u2019s Parlay fits naturally into ADVentura\u2019s seafaring mythology, where rival crews meet under the temporary protection of a parlay. Beneath the storytelling is an Ecuadorian Sumatra-seed Colorado wrapper surrounding Dominican binder and filler\u2014a medium-strength combination built more around balance and complexity than brute force.<\/p>\n The wrapper carried a handsome reddish-brown Colorado complexion, and the pre-light aroma immediately offered cedar, earth, dry tobacco and a touch of nuttiness. The cold draw continued with wood, mild spice and restrained natural sweetness. Nothing was aggressive. Blackfin\u2019s Parlay seemed almost intentionally quiet before the flame.<\/p>\n Once lit, cedar immediately established itself as the dominant flavor. Dry earth followed, then black pepper and an emerging oak character. This wasn’t an explosive pepper opening; the spice instead provided structure while toasted nuts and warm baking spices gradually appeared behind the wood.<\/p>\n The most interesting component was a subtle natural tobacco sweetness underneath everything. It wasn’t chocolate, molasses or caramel. It was simply the sweetness of well-fermented tobacco balancing the drier cedar and earth.<\/p>\n That made my\u00a0IBC Cream Soda\u00a0an unexpectedly excellent companion. Its vanilla sweetness softened the pepper and dry wood, while the carbonation cleaned my palate between draws. A sip of cold cream soda followed by Parlay’s warm cedar, earth and spice created a constant sweet-savory contrast. It wasn’t a pairing I carefully planned. It simply worked.<\/p>\n Meanwhile, Fort Lauderdale was slowly passing around us. Stacey sat beside me at the co-captain’s position, and with the engines humming beneath us, we had nowhere particularly important to be. We simply cruised.<\/p>\n The middle third was where Blackfin\u2019s Parlay became considerably more interesting. The pepper relaxed and the cedar softened, allowing oak and toasted nuts to move forward. Baking spices became more noticeable, and occasional touches of creaminess rounded the edges without ever turning this into what I would describe as a creamy cigar.<\/p>\n The retrohale transformed those subtleties. Black pepper sharpened immediately, cedar became far more aromatic, and the baking-spice character reminded me of dry cinnamon and nutmeg. Earth and toasted tobacco lingered afterward. I didn’t retrohale every puff, nor would I recommend doing so. Occasionally, however, it revealed layers the normal draw didn’t. This was also approximately when I reached an important conclusion regarding my four-legged crew member.<\/p>\n Saber does not enjoy sea legs.<\/p>\n My Belgian Malinois will happily run, train, patrol the house and ride around in his Silverado limousine, but apparently having the floor continuously move beneath him violates some provision of the Saber employment contract. He tolerated our nautical adventure. I wouldn’t say he endorsed it. Saber also hated the life vest (especially when it was Star\u2019s and probably still smells like her) but as the Captain go the boat, he has no say in the matter.<\/p>\n The final third didn’t dramatically change Blackfin\u2019s Parlay; it\u00a0darkened it. Cedar gradually became heavier oak. Earth deepened. Toasted nuts became more roasted, the underlying sweetness receded, and black pepper began returning with greater authority.<\/p>\n Occasionally, a slightly charred wood character appeared. Keeping my smoking cadence slow prevented it from becoming bitter, and being aboard the boat naturally encouraged exactly that rhythm. I’d take a draw, put the cigar down, operate the boat, talk with Stacey, check on my disgruntled canine deckhand, then return to it.<\/p>\n By the final inches, the profile had settled into\u00a0dark oak, earth, roasted tobacco, black pepper and lingering warm spice. The polite negotiations were apparently finished. The pirates were getting restless.<\/p>\n This is exactly the type of construction I want when smoking aboard a boat. I don’t want to babysit a cigar while watching traffic, bridges and wakes. Parlay allowed me to concentrate on the water and return to the cigar without constantly correcting it.<\/p>\n Its medium strength also suited an outing that began at eight in the morning. Blackfin\u2019s Parlay isn’t designed to overwhelm you with nicotine or massive flavor density. Its appeal is balance: enough complexity to study when you want to pay attention, yet composed enough to simply enjoy when your attention belongs elsewhere.<\/p>\n We had left around 8:00 that morning and stayed out until roughly 4:00\u2014eight hours cruising the Fort Lauderdale Intracoastal with no particular destination demanding our attention. Then South Florida issued its familiar afternoon eviction notice.<\/p>\n The rain came hard. Not drizzle or a passing shower, but that\u00a0blinding South Florida rain\u00a0that can erase visibility in seconds. Saber, already thoroughly unconvinced about this whole boating lifestyle, certainly didn’t need any additional evidence.<\/p>\n Stacey and I pointed\u00a0The Reel Paws\u00a0home. We made it back without incident, pulled into our slip and got her securely docked.<\/p>\n Then the day took an unexpected turn.<\/p>\n Once we were safely docked,\u00a0The Reel Paws\u00a0developed some\u00a0major electrical issues. Thankfully, they appeared there\u2014not somewhere along the Intracoastal. In hindsight, that made this our last outing aboard her for a while. But I’m not giving those electrical problems this cigar review.<\/p>\n That story belongs to the next cigar.<\/p>\n Blackfin\u2019s Parlay deserves to keep the memory of everything that came before: cedar and oak, earth, toasted nuts, warm baking spice and pepper; an ice-cold IBC Cream Soda bringing vanilla sweetness between draws; Stacey beside me; and Saber discovering that despite his many talents,\u00a0sea legs apparently aren’t among them.<\/p>\n Looking at our photograph now, I see Stacey and me shoulder-to-shoulder beneath the T-top, matching\u00a0CAPTAIN \u2014<\/b> REEL PAWS\u00a0shirts on our backs and Fort Lauderdale ahead of us. We had no idea that after eight good hours on the water, we’d return safely to the dock and discover a problem serious enough to keep\u00a0The Reel Paws\u00a0there.<\/p>\n That doesn’t diminish the day. If anything, it makes me appreciate it more.<\/p>\n We got our Saturday. We got our eight hours. We got home safely.
