Then there are cigars that somehow seem to arrive at exactly the right moment.<\/p>\n
The Room101 17th Anniversary<\/a> was the latter.<\/p>\n I had just finished working Saber at the park. It had been a productive session\u2014sit, stay, recall, distractions, corrections, rewards and plenty of repetition. \u201cLay\u201d still wasn\u2019t where I wanted it, but that is training. You don\u2019t get frustrated with the process simply because everything doesn\u2019t fall into place in a single afternoon.<\/p>\n He is a work in progress.<\/p>\n So am I.<\/p>\n When the work was finished, I grabbed an ice-cold bottle of water and headed for my favorite bench beneath the oak tree. No agenda. No stopwatch. No more commands.<\/p>\n And then I pulled out the cigar.<\/p>\n A Room101 17th Anniversary Toro<\/a>.<\/p>\n What happened next caught me completely off guard.<\/p>\n Wow.<\/p>\n Not \u201cpretty good.\u201d<\/p>\n Not \u201cinteresting.\u201d<\/p>\n Not \u201cI need to smoke another one before I decide.\u201d<\/p>\n Wow.<\/p>\n And the more I smoked it, the more I realized this wasn\u2019t merely another anniversary band wrapped around a familiar blend. It was deliberately designed to be considerably more powerful than Room101\u2019s previous 15th Anniversary release. Booth himself describes these anniversary cigars as snapshots of where Room101 happens to be at that particular moment rather than attempts to duplicate previous releases. Fernandez and Estel\u00ed were unmistakable.<\/p>\n There was Nicaraguan power.<\/p>\n But there was also refinement.<\/p>\n That\u2019s an important combination.<\/p>\n Plenty of cigars can hit hard.<\/p>\n Much fewer can hit hard and remain interesting.<\/p>\n \u2e3b<\/p>\n The Retrohale<\/strong><\/p>\n Anyone smoking this cigar and completely avoiding the retrohale is missing part of the blend.<\/p>\n But respect it.<\/p>\n This is not one I would aggressively push through the nose.<\/p>\n A controlled retrohale dramatically amplified the pepper and cedar while exposing aromas I didn\u2019t get nearly as strongly through normal draws.<\/p>\n Pepper became brighter.<\/p>\n Cedar became sharper.<\/p>\n The espresso note seemed slightly more roasted.<\/p>\n And that dark cocoa character became more aromatic than sweet.<\/p>\n Afterward, returning to a regular draw almost made the smoke taste richer.<\/p>\n That\u2019s the kind of interaction I look for in a complex cigar.<\/p>\n The retrohale shouldn\u2019t merely hurt.<\/p>\n It should reveal something.<\/p>\n This one did.<\/p>\n \u2e3b<\/p>\n Final Third<\/strong> \u2014 The Gloves Come Off<\/p>\n The final third finally showed me why Room101 positioned the 17th as a fuller-bodied anniversary release.<\/p>\n The strength had been climbing gradually rather than arriving as a cheap nicotine punch.<\/p>\n Now it was unmistakable.<\/p>\n The earth became heavier.<\/p>\n The espresso darkened.<\/p>\n Leather became more apparent.<\/p>\n Black pepper returned with greater authority.<\/p>\n And the chocolate moved from something recognizable on the palate into something closer to bittersweet cocoa.<\/p>\n The sweetness that had balanced the middle portion became less obvious.<\/p>\n In its place came deeper roasted tobacco.<\/p>\n This was the cigar getting serious.<\/p>\n But even now, it didn\u2019t become muddy.<\/p>\n That\u2019s one of my biggest criticisms of some powerful Nicaraguan cigars: eventually every flavor collapses into strong tobacco + pepper + heat.<\/p>\n The Room101 17th never completely fell into that trap.<\/p>\n Even toward the end, I could still distinguish the core components of the blend.<\/p>\n The cigar became stronger.<\/p>\n It became darker.<\/p>\n It became more concentrated.<\/p>\n But it remained composed.<\/p>\n And because I was drinking nothing but cold water, there was nowhere for imperfections to hide.<\/p>\n No sugar covering bitterness.<\/p>\n No coffee reinforcing the espresso notes.<\/p>\n Nothing manipulating the experience.<\/p>\n Just tobacco.<\/p>\n That made the performance even more impressive.<\/p>\n \u2e3b<\/p>\n Strength vs. Body<\/strong><\/p>\n These two get confused constantly.<\/p>\n For me, the body of this cigar was firmly full by the latter half.<\/p>\n The smoke was dense and the flavors saturated the palate.<\/p>\n The strength, however, developed more progressively.<\/p>\n I didn\u2019t feel as though the cigar was trying to knock me over during the first inch. It\u2019s repetition, patience and consistency.<\/p>\n Afterward, that bench beneath my favorite oak became the dividing line between work and everything else.<\/p>\n Saber could simply be Saber.<\/p>\n I could simply sit.<\/p>\n The ice water was cold enough that condensation ran down the bottle.<\/p>\n The park had begun settling into that later-evening South Florida rhythm.<\/p>\n And in my hand was this ridiculous purple-banded celebration of seventeen years of Matt Booth refusing to do things conventionally.<\/p>\n For a little while, nothing else mattered.<\/p>\n No schedule.<\/p>\n No phone.<\/p>\n No next command.<\/p>\n Just smoke.<\/p>\n \u2e3b<\/p>\n Pairing Recommendations<\/strong><\/p>\n Even though I smoked mine with ice-cold water\u2014and would absolutely do it again\u2014this cigar has enough structure to handle stronger pairings.<\/p>\n For someone who wants coffee, I\u2019d choose a straight espresso or dark Italian roast. The roasted character would complement the espresso and cocoa inside the cigar beautifully.<\/p>\n For something sweeter, a vintage-style cream soda could create a fascinating contrast.
