Who were the first people to smoke cigars? Was it the Mayans? The Taíno? The Aztecs? According to some historians, it was actually the Olmecs. Predating the aforementioned peoples, the Olmecs are considered the "mother culture" of Mesoamerica, inhabiting the modern-day San Andrés Tuxtla region of Mexico—the same tropical lowlands where the beloved San Andrés tobacco continues to be grown to this day.

This is the inspiration for Foundation Cigar Company's Olmec cigar series, highlighting some of the the finest San Andrès Negro leaf available to showcase two variations of the Olmec blend: Olmec Claro and Olmec Maduro. Company owner/founder, Nick Melillo, built the Olmec blend with this high-grade leaf in mind. These leaves are fermented slowly at low temperatures, preserving the natural oils that provide inherently rich flavor. The wrapper has been joined by Nicaraguan leaves from the country's famed Estelí and Jalapa valleys, both of which have been aged for three years prior to the rolling process.

The Foundation Olmec Maduro cigar is the darker of the two, brilliantly combining the spice of Estelí, the sweetness of Jalapa, and the richness of San Andrés to offer a deep and satisfying experience for the seasoned palate. Crafted out of the famed A.J. Fernández factory of Estelí, the cigars are gently box-pressed, making for a cool smoking temperature that allows for long-lasting flavors of gritty earth, black pepper, toasted oak, deep mocha, and Swiss Miss-like hot cocoa through the finish.
